Bespoke Carpentry, Shelving & Storage — Winchester

This project is a strong showcase for OA’s carpentry work. Across several rooms of a large Winchester home, the team designed and built bespoke joinery from scratch — floor-to-ceiling shelving, a fitted desk unit, built-in wardrobes and a feature bed recess for a child’s bedroom. Everything was then painted and finished by the same team.

Library shelving in the living room

The living room received full-height shelving running along two walls. The during images show the carcasses being built on site and the first coats of paint going on. The finished result is a room that functions as a proper library — warm sage green throughout, with the shelving painted to match the walls so it reads as one connected piece rather than something added as an afterthought.

In a second living space a separate run of lower built-in storage with shaker-style cupboard doors was fitted along one wall, providing concealed storage below the open shelving above. The cornice detail at the top ties the whole unit to the ceiling and gives it a properly finished, architectural quality.

Bespoke desk and shelving

In a separate room, a full-width desk was built using a solid oak worktop, with a bespoke shelving unit above it running floor to ceiling. The during image shows the MDF carcasses going in — the structure is substantial and built to last. Once painted in a deep terracotta, with the floral wallpaper behind, the room has a lot of personality. It’s a practical workspace that doesn’t look like one.

Child’s bedroom bed recess

The most bespoke element of the project is the bed recess built into the child’s bedroom. The during image shows the frame being constructed and clad in tongue-and-groove boarding. In the finished image, the whole recess — ceiling, sides and the platform base — is painted in a soft slate blue, creating a self-contained sleeping space that sits neatly within the room. Feature wallpaper covers the remaining walls, completing the look.

Built and finished by one team

Every piece of joinery on this project was built, fitted and painted by OA. That matters because the quality of the finish depends on the same people understanding how the carpentry was made. There were no handovers between trades, no miscommunication — just a consistent standard of work from the first cut to the final coat.

For clients who want bespoke storage or built-in furniture that looks like it belongs in the house rather than was dropped into it, this is exactly the kind of work OA does best.
