Bespoke Joinery — Winchester
This was a top-floor conversion project in a Winchester home — a new room created within the roof space, with a staircase built to reach it and storage fitted to make the most of the space. OA handled the carpentry and the decorating, taking the rooms from bare plaster and bare steel right through to a fully finished result.
The staircase
The before image shows the steel staircase frame already in place — painted grey, with no treads. OA fitted solid oak steps throughout, giving the staircase a warm, natural finish that sits well against the dark steel frame and white walls. The open-tread design keeps the feel light and modern. It’s a strong centrepiece for the space and the craftsmanship in the fitting shows clearly in the finished photos.
Built-in storage
In the new room, built-in cupboards and shelving were fitted to work within the angles of the roof space. The during image shows the carcasses going in — clean joinery, properly fitted to the room. Once painted out in white, they sit flush with the walls and look like they were always part of the building.
Decorating
The main room has a bold deep green feature wall, painted against white ceilings and woodwork. The exposed steel roof beams were painted in a near-black, tying the structural elements into the overall scheme rather than leaving them as an afterthought. It’s a confident colour choice that works well in a room with this much character.
The rest of the decorating — walls, ceilings, all woodwork and the staircase surround — was completed to a clean, consistent standard throughout.
Carpentry and decorating under one roof
This project is a good example of what OA does well: carpentry and decorating handled by the same team, from start to finish. The staircase treads, storage and painted finishes all had to work together, and having one team responsible for all of it meant nothing was left to chance. For clients fitting out a new room or making changes to an existing property, that continuity makes a real difference to the end result.
