Plastering Case Study: Complete Replaster & Redecorate of a Large Period Property

This large period property near Alresford needed a full refresh from the ground up. Before any colour went on, walls and ceilings were stripped back, patched and fully skimmed throughout – the kind of thorough preparation that makes the difference between a finish that lasts and one that doesn’t. Once the plaster was right, the team decorated every room inside and tackled the exterior windows, doors and timber. The result is a home that feels considered and well looked after, inside and out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Plastering

Costs & Quotes

Plastering costs depend on the size of the area, the condition of existing surfaces, and the type of work involved. A single room skim is a very different job to full dry lining across multiple rooms. We provide clear, itemised quotes after visiting the property – get in touch and we’ll arrange a time to come and take a look.

Artex Ceilings

Yes. Skimming over the Artex with a fresh coat of plaster is usually the most straightforward option, giving a smooth, modern finish without full removal. Where removal is more appropriate, we’ll advise accordingly after assessing the ceiling.

Artex applied before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, so it should be tested before any removal work begins. If asbestos is present, removal must be carried out by a licensed contractor. Covering with a skim coat is often the safer and more practical solution, and we’ll talk you through what’s right for your property.

Plastering vs Dry Lining

Traditional wet plastering applies plaster directly to walls and ceilings, creating a hard, durable finish. Dry lining uses plasterboard fixed to the surface – it’s faster and less messy, but doesn’t always give the same depth of finish. We’ll recommend the right approach for your project during the site visit.

For new builds and partition walls, plasterboard is often the more practical choice. For older or period properties where durability and a traditional finish matter, wet plastering is usually better. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on your property and what you’re trying to achieve.

Preparing for Plasterers

Clear the room as much as possible and make sure we have good access to the walls and ceiling. We’ll take care of all the preparation work from there – including stripping, patching, and priming – so there’s nothing you need to do beyond making the space accessible.

Hallway Refresh

Hallways take a lot of daily wear and plaster in older properties often shows it – hairline cracks, hollow patches, and uneven surfaces are common. A fresh skim coat across the walls gives a smooth, even base that makes a significant difference before any decorating begins. It’s also a good opportunity to add or restore coving, which can sharpen the whole look of the space.

YOUR HOME. REIMAGINED.
